Week of 10.19.18 Recap
Monday: intro to health class: rules, expectations, the 4 questions and 5 things i want my teacher to know about me.

Tuesday: Intro to the 7 habits presentations. groups assigned, roles within groups discussed. rules and expectations, timeline, rubric and other requirements

Weds: Day 1 reading the assigned chapter and note taking on their habits

Day 2 presentation planning

Monday: Day 3 finalize presentations.  pass out peer assessments for homework.  

Tuesday: Presentation day: groups were not prepared to present. 1 day extra to prep.

Weds: Presentation day habits 1,2,3,4 

Thursday: Presentation day habits 5,6,7

Friday: guest speaker: on suicide prevention with school counselor. how to recognize the warning signs of depression and suicide (which will be covered more in our upcoming unit of social emotional wellness)

Monday: organize 7 habit presentations to be graded
Journal Quote: people don't lack strength, they lack will
DBQ 8 minutes.  explanation to students where to find information on class if they are absent.

Tuesday: journal quote: the expert in anything was once a beginner. DBQ/directed reading on pages 4-7 what is health?  introduce the health triangle: the 3 sides are 
physical/ mental/emotional and social health.
jammin minutes. Self assessment quiz on health(no grade)

Weds: no journal quote...DBQ: what factor has the most influence on your health? directed reading pages 8-11
what influences your health?  heredity, environment, family, friends and the media.
six hat thinking skills: these skills are used to make students aware of the different types of thinking and to stress the need to wear different hats for different tasks and problems.
the hats' roles are
1. Blue hat: what do i know? what do i need to know?
2. Green hat: how can we think differently?
3. White hat: what are the facts?
4. Red hat: what are the emotions here or how do i feel?
5. Yellow hat: what would happen if?
6. Black hat: why it will not work (devil's advocate)
other thinking skills:
emotions vs. ego: what precedes your thinking? what ordinary emotions are involved? 
normal emotions are: love, fear, joy, suspicion, jealousy, sorrow, remorse.  ego emotions are those that protect the ego and are often involved in status. they are pride, loss of face, needing to be right all the time, and generally involved in a person's image of himself/herself.

Thursday: Intro to SEW...mental and emotional health; directed reading pages 188-191. pics taken 
understanding what resilient is; able to bounce back from disappointment, difficulty or crisis. understanding who you are, and the 3 factors that influence your personality. heredity, environment, and behavior
understanding what self concept is and what self esteem is and how they both influence who you are.
Homework assigned: 4 questions on google classroom which is due 03.25.19 
reading page 32 to understand what values are and where they come from.

Friday: JQ #68: why does thinking positively help to improve self-esteem?   DBQ: how does the media (TV, radio, magazines, radio, billboards, and movies ) affect the way people see themselves. self-concept/self esteem in class project. 

Week of 11.9.18 Recap
Monday: JQ #18 what is an individual's self-concept based on?   
Ownership paper w/19 hard things to passed out.  directed reading pages 191-193 developing mental and emotional health.  ways to improve self esteem
1. set realistic goals
2. focus on your strengths
3. ask for help when you need it
4. learn to accept constructive feedback
5. learn from your mistakes and failures, but don't dwell on them.
in addition: learn to respect others by avoid judging people according to your own culture, environment, and background.   understand what core ethical values, which is choosing to what is right. important part of respecting others is developing empathy.  
attitude and behavior affect your mental and emotional 
health. take ownership of your attitude and behavior, be personally accountable for these two elements of your life.

Tuesday: no school PLC Day and election day.  

Weds: JQ #19: when you have a problem, whom do you want to talk to?  when something great happens, whom do want to tell?  DBQ: discuss an emotion that you think teens might have difficulty dealing with?  why?
directed reading pages 194- 197 your emotions
primary emotions are expressed by people of all cultures
the primary emotions are: happiness, sadness, anger, and fear.  some emotions are not expressed in the same way by all people. these emotions are called "social emotions" or learned emotions. these are called love, guilt and shame.

Thursday: JQ #33 list 3 major life changes you have experienced during the past 5 years?  No DBQ 
Interim Quiz 1(done to measure reaction to the word quiz) 
stress: is the response of your body and mind to being challenged or threatened. two types of stress are called:
distress: negative stress
eustress: positive stress

the fight or flight response: is a response to the stressor.

your body prepares to either "fight" the stressor or "take flight" and escape.  Know the definitions of: 1. fatigue
2. physical fatigue 3. psychological fatigue

Monday: weekend download w/students.  table reading on pages 203-205 mental and emotional problems. where to go for help.  review pages 206-207 teens and suicide and helping a friend.

Tuesday: directed reading: pages developing communication skills: verbal communication: means using words to express yourself, either in speaking or in writing.  Non-verbal communication: all the ways you can get a message across without using words.  body language: a type of non-verbal communication that includes posture, gestures, and facial expressions.
skills for effective communication: using tact: the quality of knowing what to say to avoid offending others.

speaking skills:
* think before you speak
* use I messages
* make clear simple statements.  be specific when giving
suggestions or expressing ideas.
* be honest and direct,, but use tact. avoid being rude or insulting.
* use appropriate body language. Make eye contact with the other person and use suitable gestures as needed to clarify your meaning.
* let your listener respond to what you need to make clearer.
listening skills:
* use appropriate body language. lean forward slightly, and make eye contact with the speaker. use suitable facial expressions or gestures, or nod your head to show that you are listening.
* use conversation encourages--words that prompt a speaker to continue---to show that you are listening
* mirror the speaker's thoughts and feelings. repeat or rephrase what the speaker has said to show that you are listening. Show empathy
* avoid interrupting the speaker, but ask questions when appropriate.
